NORTHFIELD — The Norwich University softball team will celebrate its 40th anniversary during Norwich 200 Bicentennial and Homecoming Weekend on Sept. 20 with an alumni game at the NU Softball Field.
Norwich’s varsity softball program began in 1979 under head coach Lisa Fernandez.
The 40th anniversary celebration will kick off with a pre-game social/cookout slated for noon on Friday, Sept. 20. The alumni game will follow at 1 p.m. on the NU Softball Field, located across the train tracks between Howard Field and the Dog River.
Registration prior to Sept. 1 is encouraged. Player entry to the alumni game is $20 per person with the proceeds support Norwich softball.

Cats rank 3rd in poll
BOSTON, Mass. — The University of Vermont field hockey team was selected to finish third in the East Division in the America East Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The conference released the poll Wednesday afternoon.
Vermont tallied 14 points in the poll to finish third in the East Division voting. Albany, the 2018 East Division regular season champions, tallied 25 points and five first-place votes to claim top honors in the poll. Maine accrued 21 points and one first-place vote to take second.
Monmouth, the conference’s newest member, tallied 12 points along with New Hampshire to slot behind the Catamounts. UMass Lowell rounded out the poll in sixth with six points.
After being selected to finish fifth in the division in 2018, the Catamounts finished the 2018 season in third with a 4-4 conference mark and an 8-11 overall record, earning a berth in the 2018 America East Tournament in Palo Alto, California. The 2018 Cats beat then 15th-ranked Maine in Orono last season by a 3-0 final, marking the program’s first win over the Black Bears in over a decade.
The Catamounts will open the season Aug. 30 against Syracuse at Moulton-Winder Field in Burlington.
