NORTHFIELD — The Lasell baseball team swept Norwich on Friday in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference doubleheader at Garrity Field.
The Lasers opened with 10-4 victory and needed eight innings during Game 2 to secure a 5-3 win.
Lasell broke open a scoreless tie in the first game with three runs in the top of the third inning. Norwich rallied for a run in the bottom of the third as sophomore shortstop Jacob Parizo lined a one-run single to center field that drove in senior second baseman Mike Lesco.
The Lasers scored three runs in the top of the fourth for a 6-1 lead before the Cadets attempted to rally once again in the bottom of the frame.
Junior left fielder Chris Dayos started the comeback bid with his first-career home run to make it 6-2. Lesco followed with one-run single to cut the deficit to 6-3. Junior third baseman Brendon Profita singled to right, driving in Lesco to make it 6-4. Lasell scored two runs in the sixth inning and two in the seventh to cap the scoring.
Freshman Tanner Raymond took the loss for the Cadets after allowing six earned runs on nine hits and one walk during four innings. Parizo finished the game with three hits, while Lesco also had three hits in addition to scoring two runs.
Lasell jumped out to an early lead again in Game 2, building a 2-0 edge in the first inning. Norwich rallied with two runs in the bottom of the third on one-run singles by senior center fielder Kevin Lynch and senior right fielder Jacob Barlow.
Lynch delivered another one-run single in the fourth inning for a 3-2 Norwich lead. Lasell tied the game at 3 in the sixth inning. The teams headed to extra innings after a scoreless seventh.
The Lasers scored twice in the top of the eighth and the Cadets couldn’t produce any offense in the bottom of the frame.
Senior Jake Ryan allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits and one walk over six innings. He struck out five batters and falls to 2-4. Raymond served as the designated hitter in Game 2 and provided a spark at the plate, recording two hits and scoring two runs.
Norwich now stands at 5-17 overall and 3-8 in GNAC play. Lasell improves to 17-13 overall and 7-6 in conference action. The Cadets will travel to play a non-conference doubleheader at Northern Vermont University-Lyndon on Monday at 1 p.m.
