NORTHFIELD — Freshman forward Braedyn Aubin scored his first collegiate goal to lift the Norwich University men’s hockey team to a 1-0 victory over Southern Maine on Saturday at Kreitzberg Arena to close out Alumni Weekend.
Aubin scored at the 16:10 mark, picking off a USM defensive zone clearing attempt and then firing a wrist on targt. USM goalie Anthony D’Aloisio got a piece of the shot, but the puck deflected over his shoulder. As D’Aloisio attempted to scramble back, the puck bounced off his back and into the net.
Norwich outshot Southern Maine 40-19. Norwich senior goalie Tom Aubrun stopped all 19 shots he faced to pick up his third consecutive shutout to open the season. He has posted 10 shutouts in his career.
Aubrun is the reigning conference goalie of the week following a superb performance during a 4-0 victory over the University of New England. He made 25 saves, shutting down UNE’s returning leading scorer on a breakaway in the third period.
Norwich (3-0, 2-0 NEHC) will travel to play Hobard at 7 p.m. Friday in a rematch of the last two NEHC Championship games. The Cadets will close out the New York portion of their NEHC schedule the following day with a 4 p.m. gam at Skidmore.
