If there is any doubt about the moral decline of our culture, a story published in the Feb. 7 edition of The Times Argus titled “Legislature takes a look at prostitution” should convince any last doubter. Three women legislators want to set up a committee to modernize Vermont's prostitution laws. A simpler title would be to legalize prostitution.

Are they out of their minds? The committee approach would give them a little cover, they could say, “The committee recommended legalizing the oldest profession.” They could recommend partial immunity to report a crime but prostitution should remain illegal. I urge the committee to keep the oldest profession, illegal! If it is legalized, it would spread and young and desperate women would be tricked or coerced into the profession, and once in this vortex of evil, it would be difficult to get out.
