Here in beautiful, bucolic Vermont, some folks, those with the means and the intent, can legally hunt and kill one of our fellow creatures each and every day of every year. I am speaking of coyotes, whose shrill, haunting and placating call to the full moon can be a beautiful and memorable experience to those of us who would prefer to share our state with them.

But the folks who want to kill them would wipe them out. And, why not? We have wiped out the wolf and the catamount and, further afield, we humans are busy wiping out the elephant, the tiger and most other large mammals. It is as if some of us want to be the only big mammals remaining on planet Earth. And won't that be a happy day.
