I want to commend Steve Pappas, executive editor for The Times Argus and Rutland Herald, for making the decision to hire Courtney Lamdin as the new news editor.

Steve has received his share of punishment for trying to keep a small-town paper running, We all know that there are many ways to get our news today, but I applaud him for trying to focus on the local aspect of news.

The hiring of Courtney is a real plus. She is a product of Spaulding High School and a graduate of St. Mike's in Colchester. She understands local and technology. She is an award-winning journalist.

When her boss, Chicago-based publisher Jim O’Rourke, offered to keep her as a reporter after deciding to downsize, Courtney said she wanted more. Steve recognized a very talented individual who is not only a local talent but a darn good award-winning journalist.

I do have a bias. I have known her for awhile. My challenge to her is to investigate why talented individuals like her decide to stay in Vermont. Please help dispel the myth that all of our young talent wants out of Vermont.

Welcome back, Courtney. You will make The Times Argus, Barre and Vermont proud. Oh, I forgot, she already has.
