Paul Arthur Rico BERLIN CORNERS — Paul Arthur Rico, of Berlin Corners, Vermont, passed away Sept. 27, 2019, soon after his 90th birthday. Paul was born and raised in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, at Lake Winnipesaukee. Paul's father emigrated from Poland as a teenager. Passing through Immigration, he was given the surname "Rico" by authorities who found his original name beyond their skills. The new American married local girl, Helen Glidden, in Wolfeboro, where they later raised five children Paul, Peter, John, Frank and Marion. The children never learned their father's ancestral name. As a young man, Paul Rico served in the Army, stationed in Germany. He later graduated from the University of New Hampshire and began a career as a claims settlement adjuster in major insurance companies. In time, he met the young office secretary who became his wife, Judy Van Keuren Rico. Paul' s career brought moves to Massachusetts and Vermont where the couple raised three children Jeffrey, Jennifer and Daniel. Paul and Judy shared a passion for organic gardening. In Vermont, Judy completed a degree in horticulture and started a business raising and selling garden flowering plants. Paul rebuilt and revised a greenhouse purchased at auction, inspiring the name of the garden business "Judy's Greenhouse." Their home in Berlin Corners on four acres and a pond, was the ideal site. Together, they also raised much of the family food and sold fresh blueberries and vegetables. One autumn, when the pond fish were threatened by dangerously low water, Paul sifted out all the pond fish for the winter, keeping them safe in massive, well-tended barrels in the garage. Come spring when the water rose, he returned the fish safely to the pond. As years passed, Paul watched his family come to include several grandchildren, all now in New England. An avid Red Sox fan, Paul enjoyed many a game, watching from his comfortable living room chair. With a cat or two on his lap, he rooted for the home team. Paul is survived by his wife, Judy; his sister, Marion Lampron, of New Hampshire; his son, Jeffrey and wife Barbara Rico, of Massachusetts, and their children Jeff, Jennifer, Laura, Patrick and Lilli; his daughter, Jennifer Rico Spooner and husband Tim Spooner, of Ryegate, and their daughter, Marissa; and son Daniel and wife Polly Rico, of Montgomery, and their daughters Dahlia and Lora Rico.
