Joan A. (Lathrop) Tucker ORANGE — Joan Annette (Lathrop) Tucker, 85, passed away in the early hours of Feb. 1, 2019, at Central Vermont Hospital, after a very brief stay. She was born at Barre City Hospital on Nov. 1, 1933, to Lovell W. and Martha Theodora (“Dora” Preece) Lathrop, the younger of two children born to them. She was raised on a farm on Chelsea’s West Hill, along with her brother, Walter, and attended schools in Chelsea, graduating from Chelsea High School in 1952. In August 1952, she married Leon Tucker in Chelsea, and they made their home in Orange. Joan was a loving wife and companion to Leon throughout their 64 years of marriage and together, they raised four children. Leon passed away in January of 2017. Joan worked for Sprague Electric in Barre during the early days of their marriage. She then dedicated herself as a full-time mother and homemaker who enjoyed sewing, gardening, pickling and canning, and was a member of the Home Dem Club of Orange. Once her children were raised, Joan began a career with the State of Vermont, where she worked in the Department of Motor Vehicles and the Business Tax Department until her retirement. Joan and Leon enjoyed spending time at the family camp on Lake Groton and square dancing with the Central Vermont Squares. They also enjoyed snowmobiling together as members of the Washington Snow Flyers. After retirement, they enjoyed many winters in Arizona, spending time with family and friends. Joan is survived by three sons Dennis, of Gilbert, Arizona, Alan, of Pueblo, Colorado, Norman and wife Anne, of Bloomington, Indiana; and a daughter, Sharon, of Tempe, Arizona. She is also survived by eight grandchildren Cory, Connor (Kendra), Carrie, Zachary, Jennifer and Kristin Tucker, Melinda Milne Jay and Joshua Milne (April); as well as six great-grandchildren Kendall Honeycutt, Sidnee, Carson and Casey Jay, and Riley and Jace Milne. Also surviving are sisters Jae Brainard, Mary Lathrop Gray and husband Jim, brother Warren Lathrop and wife Karen; sisters-in-law Michelle Lathrop, Grace Lathrop and Lorraine Tucker; along with many nieces and nephews from the Tucker and Lathrop families. Joan was predeceased by her parents Lovell and Dora Lathrop; and her brothers Walter and Timothy Lathrop. A graveside service will be held in the Maple View Cemetery in Washington, Vermont, later in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice, 600 Granger Road, Barre, VT 05641.
