Gary Lynn Sanders NORTHFIELD — Gary Lynn Sanders, 71, died unexpectedly Tuesday, July 23, 2019, at his home in Northfield. He was born in Northfield on April 14, 1948, the son of Lynn and Betty (Kimball) Sanders. Gary was a graduate of Northfield High School, class of 1966. On May 27, 1972, he married Carol Haubois in Ogunquit, Maine. Gary worked on the family farm, Tamarack Farm, as a young man. He served as a “special” officer for the Northfield Police Department under the leadership of his uncle, Chief Burton Sanders. While serving as a “special,” Gary was shot in the line of duty. Gary had worked for Northfield Fuels, Covey’s Garage and Vermont Fish and Game. He later joined Vermont Public Safety Department where he was a Vermont State Police auxiliary trooper, as well as many other special service positions, retiring in 2010 after over 30 years of service. Gary was a member of the National Rifle Association, Ducks Unlimited and North American Hunting Club. He was a NRA-certified rifle coach and worked with the Northfield Rifle Team for the past 25 years. He enjoyed making duck decoys, recreational shooting, hunting, sugaring, listening to classic country music, his dogs and spending time with his beloved granddaughter. Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Carol, of Northfield; his father, Lynn Sanders, of Northfield; his daughter, Jennifer Zandy and husband Keith, of Berlin; son, Jason Sanders, of Northfield; siblings Gregory Sanders and wife Audrey, Margaret Dodge and husband Richard, all of Northfield; his granddaughter, Alexandra Zandy, of Berlin; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mom, Betty. In keeping with Gary’s wishes, there are no calling hours or funeral service. A gathering to celebrate his life will be held Friday, July 26, starting at 6 p.m. at the American Legion on Depot Square in Northfield. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Northfield Rifle Range, c/o Kingston Funeral Home, 35 Slate Ave., Northfield, VT 05663.
