BARRE — A fractured storm drain that has created a significant subsurface void will require the emergency closure of a short stretch of Prospect Street starting first thing Tuesday.

Repairs are expected to take two days and Prospect Street will be closed to through traffic between South Main and the Brooklyn streets.

The 24-inch storm drain is located near the mouth of Merchants’ Row. Though the surface looks like a good sized pothole — roughly 20 inches in diameter, there is perhaps a four foot void beneath, creating the potential for a significant sinkhole on a busy section of city street.
