BARRE — Police say someone threatened to stab officers in Barre City during a mental health incident.

Police said a welfare check was requested Tuesday at a residence on Pearl Street Extension for a resident who hadn't been seen or heard from in about two weeks. Officers arrived and were met by someone who threatened to stab them with a steak knife. The identity of the person has not been released by police.

Police said officers retreated and were talking to the person, who they say was suffering from some type of mental health issue, while the person was inside an apartment. Police from Montpelier also responded to assist police in Barre and the person was eventually taken into custody without incident.

Police said a steak knife was found inside the residence on a kitchen counter.

The person was taken to Central Vermont Medical Center for evaluation.
