BARRE — A Northfield man has been placed on probation for having sex with a minor.

Eric Bressette, 20, was sentenced Wednesday in Washington County criminal court in Barre to 30 to 180 days, all suspended except for 60 hours of work crew. Bressette was also placed on probation for five years on a felony count of sexual assault on a victim under 16 years and a misdemeanor count of prohibited conduct. He pleaded guilty to the charges in August.

Barre City Police Deputy Chief Larry Eastman said in his affidavit a report was made in November 2016 from a woman stating Bressette, who was 17 at the time, had sex with her 13-year-old daughter in Northfield. The mother told police she believed the sexual relationship was consensual, though the victim said it wasn’t, and it had occurred in September 2016.

The mother told police the victim was upset because Bressette had started talking to another girl. Eastman said police spoke to the victim, who reported Bressette had forced himself on her, and she told him to stop.

Eastman said Bressette told him he believed he and the victim had sex once. He denied forcing himself on the victim. Bressette told Eastman the victim started the sexual contact. After initially telling Eastman he thought the victim was 16 years old, he said he knew she was 13 when they had sex, according to the affidavit.
