BERLIN — A woman who reportedly jumped from a narrow Barre-Montpelier Road bridge Tuesday morning was taken to the hospital after being rescued from the Stevens Branch of the Winooski River by Barre firefighters.

The woman’s identity and the extent of her injuries were not immediately available from Berlin police, who were called to the scene near Union Bank shortly after 8 a.m. Barre firefighters and a Barre Town ambulance also responded.

Firefighters used ropes to scale down the steep bank of a section of the river located between the Union Bank property and the Price Chopper plaza. Using a portable plastic stretcher they were able to get the woman back up to the bank’s parking lot where she was loaded into the waiting ambulance and transported to the hospital.
