Naylor & Breen battles rain to meet deadlines

In mid-July Rob Naylor, co-owner of Naylor & Breen Builders, Inc. in Brandon, felt it safe to say his team was on schedule to finish a project in time to open the doors in mid-November. But he quickly followed the statement with “if it stops raining.” He was referring to the Blue Seal Feeds and Needs retail store going up on Alta Woods Drive and facing Route 7, south of Brandon Village. Naylor and Breen Builders is the general contractor. Most of the work is done inhouse, Naylor said, from site preparation to landscaping, concrete work, insulation, siding and roofing, as well as the interior. Cabinetry and built-ins are made by the company’s subsidiary, Hawk Hill Cabinetry & Custom Woodwork. Vermont subcontractors include GSK Climate Control Inc. of East Dorset with mechanicals; store front by Royal Glass of Rutland; other windows by R.K. Miles in Manchester. Most of the building materials were supplied by Brandon Lumber & Millwork. Construx, a New Hampshire firm, is erecting the steel cold-storage building attached to the rear of the store. Robert Naylor and Peter Breen formed their partnership in 1978. As the demand for residential condominiums waned in the 1980s, the company diversified its capabilities to include high-end homes, multi-unit apartments, schools, commercial and industrial buildings. They are well known throughout Vermont for adapting historic buildings for modern uses. Now, they often build or convert existing buildings to affordable housing units for non-profits. In Rutland, they are on track to complete Phase II of an affordable housing project for the non-profit Rutland Housing Authority. Forest Park, the site of a run-down rental housing complex, had to be cleared of all structures before erecting 23 new rental units, a community center and a maintenance building. Forest Street is now Hickory Street. v
