"Move to the Music" sitting or standing exercise class for seniors.
If you are an older person and need to get more exercise in your life, the Waterbury Library is offering an 8 week, back-to-back movement classes for seniors on Fridays, beginning October 19th at 11 a.m. in the SAL room. The first class called "Move to the Music" can be done sitting or standing, where participants move to a mix of music, from Country Western and Big Band, to lounge music and old favorites- in other words, something for every taste. The music is designed to get participants going- no counting, no repetitions, just fun and simple movements. No weights are involved, the class is primarily light cardiovascular movement, strengthening and balance activities. Beginning on October 19th and running until December 14th (with no class on November 23rd), each class is a whole unto itself with no previous learning required, so participants can join anytime. Following the "Move to the Music" class, "Chill to the "Chi" Qi Gong" occurs from 11:30 to noon. This class is a continuation of simple meditative, relaxing movement patterns based on ancient Chinese concepts of health and well-being. Done to a video by Lee Holden, the class is also led by Kenneth Russell.
Kenneth Russell is the SASH (Support and Services at Home) Coordinator & Program Manager in Barre. Many may remember Kenneth from the Tai Chi and Qi Gong classes the library has been hosting over the past years. His goal is to have older folks strong and healthy, and movement is not only correlated with a stronger body, but a stronger mind as well. Although all are welcome, the class will focus on elders and those with limited mobility.
Classes are simple- there are no moves to follow, and nothing you have to remember; simply follow along with the instructor and have fun. Participants can come to either classes or both. Class size is limited to 12. Call the library to sign up at 244-7036
- Starting Friday, November 16th, 2018, repeats every week on Friday until Friday, March 29, 2019 @ 11:00 am – 12:00 pm
