• Wallingford fire district vacancy filled

WALLINGFORD — Sherry Hardy will fill a vacant seat on a three-member board responsible for governing Fire District 1.

The Select Board appointed Hardy to the town’s Prudential Committee. She fills the seat vacated by Erika Stocker — who no longer lives in town — and joins Alicia Sharp and Scott Sendra on the committee.

By state law, the Prudential Committee recommends a person for a vacancy and the Select Board is authorized to make the appointment, according to board chairman William Brooks.

“They got a letter of interest from Sherry Hardy,” he said.

The board unanimously approved the appointment.

Board members indicated they had not received a letter of resignation from Stocker as the town’s emergency management coordinator.

The board also hired Stephen Lanfear as road foreman following a recent executive session.

The board emerged from the closed door meeting after 45 minutes and approved a motion to hire Lanfear at a rate of $19 an hour. It was noted that Lanfear may be eligible for a raise after six months based on job performance. Lanfear was hired after the board held a series of meetings in February and March to update the road foreman job description as well as executive sessions to conduct interviews.

In other business, municipal officials delayed a decision on Zero-Sort recycling at the town’s transfer station until cost estimates can be obtained for upgrades to accommodate the new system. The town will need to extend the concrete pad and fence as well as update electrical wiring.

“I think we need to make a commitment to go ahead with it,” Selectman Gary Fredette said, adding that it would take time for Casella Waste Systems to order the equipment for Zero-Sort recycling.

Board members agreed to delay a decision until next month when they can review cost estimates.
