RUTLAND TOWN — A search dog combing the woods for a man missing from Rutland found a body off Kathy Drive in Rutland Town at about noon Saturday.

Police could not confirm Saturday night whether it was the remains of 33-year-old Danny Goldstein of 116 N. Main St., missing since July 26.

Goldstein’s father, Gerald Goldstein, said Saturday night that the private investigator who came upon the body with the dog “strongly suggested” that it probably was their son.

“We’re going to come and find out for sure,” Goldstein said from Kansas City, Kan.

“It’s very sad news for somebody.”

The remains were taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, where dental records will be used to identify them by the middle of this week, according to police.

The finding came more than a month after Danny Goldstein, a food service worker at Rutland’s Mountain View Center, disappeared from his apartment without a trace.

The man, believed to be suffering from depression and off his prescribed medication, walked away from his apartment in the early morning of July 26, leaving cash, his bank card, all identification and personal items behind.

The family enlisted the help of numerous private investigators and volunteer search and rescue teams that specialize in locating missing people.

Fliers with Goldstein’s face continue to plaster telephone poles, trees and car windows citywide and beyond.

According to Detective Lt. Tim Oliver of the Vermont State Police, two of the family’s search teams — Massachusetts Air Scenting and Berkshire Mountain Search and Rescue — located the human skeletal remains, which were badly decomposed.

Rutland police, criminal investigators with the Vermont State Police and medical examiners combed the area further for hours, according to Oliver.

Gerald Goldstein said he didn’t know any further details about the finding.

Danny Goldstein is described as white, 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing 160 pounds, with short brownish-gray hair and brown eyes.

Anyone with information about his disappearance is asked to call 773-1816 or state police at 773-9101.
