A woman was killed Tuesday afternoon when she and her daughter were struck by a vehicle in the Green Mountain Shopping Plaza in Rutland Town, according to Vermont State Police.

Police said Sylvia Bersaw, 82, of North Clarendon, was killed in the parking lot of Hannaford's supermarket.

Police said they were called to the parking lot about 2:30 p.m. for a reported crash involving a motor vehicle and two pedestrians.

Police said they spoke to numerous witnesses who all said the women were walking into the supermarket when a vehicle backed into them knocking them to the pavement.

The driver of the vehicle, Wayne Miller, 87, of Rutland, applied the brakes before striking the women, police said.

Bersaw and Joanne Severance, 55, were transported to Rutland Regional Medical Center.

Bersaw died while at RRMC. Severance's condition was not immediately available.

The operator of the vehicle was uninjured and medically released on scene.

The crash is still under investigation and anyone with information is asked to call state police at 773-9101.

With respect to the elderly, when is VT going to pass a law to retest folks of a certain age? The man obviously didn't apply the brakes before striking them.
