16-year-old dies after accidentally shooting self

A junior at Bellows Falls Union High School apparently accidentally shot himself in the stomach Wednesday afternoon at a home in Westminster West on Old Athens Road.
Chris Kobel, 16, died at Springfield Hospital after being transferred there from Urgent Care in Bellows Falls following the shooting, which is being investigated by Vermont State Police.
School counselors from the high school and other schools in the district, as well as grief counselors, were on hand Thursday to help students cope with Kobel's death, according to Chris Hodsden, principal of Bellows Falls Union High School.
He described Kobel as popular and well-liked, and his death affected many students.
Windham County State's Attorney Tracy Shriver said there were witnesses to the accidental shooting. She said she had ordered an autopsy.
