MONTPELIER — The secretary of state's office says last week's voter turnout in Vermont was the highest it's been in 16 years.
Of the state's 454,466 registered voters, 71.9 percent cast ballots in the election. In 1992, voter turnout was 76.3 percent.
This year, 29 percent of voters cast absentee ballots, compared to a high of 19 percent in 2004.
The final figures also show that independent Anthony Pollina beat Democrat Gaye Symington by 257 votes for second place in the race for governor. Both candidates were far behind incumbent Republican Gov. James Douglas. The results also show the Liberty Union Party will lose its major party status for the next election since no candidate won 5 percent of the vote in the statewide races.
