    Don’t blame Racine

On the surface, Tom King’s letter defending Gov. Shumlin’s termination of Doug Racine’s tenure as human services secretary makes perfect sense.

Since Shumlin’s election and Racine’s appointment, however, Doug Racine’s resume has only added one item — AHS secretary.

Shumlin’s appointment of Racine was clearly a political one — for a highly political position — as were many other appointments. If Tom King is correct, his statement “Mr. Racine must take ultimate responsibility” is far less appropriate than “the governor must take ultimate responsibility.” The governor knew Mr. Racine’s background extremely well.

As for the way the firing was handled — if it was reported accurately — pretty shabby for a guy who has done as much as Mr. Racine has.

Thank you, Mr. Racine, for doing the best you could with what you had in what might well be an impossible job for any one human being.

I agree with the spirit of Joseph Gainza’s remarks.
