WOODBURY — Muriel Jean Benjamin, 83, of South Woodbury, died Saturday, Aug. 23, 2014, at the Woodridge Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Berlin.
She was born Aug. 28, 1930, in Bury, Quebec, the daughter of the late F. Russell and Marjory (Harrison) Dougherty. She attended English schools in Bury, graduating in 1947. She earned a registered nursing degree in Montreal.
On Aug. 22, 1952, she married Gerald Milton “Ben” Benjamin in Quebec, and they moved to Hamilton, Ontario.
She worked at Hamilton Hospital in Hamilton, where she became the youngest registered nurse to take charge of a floor at the age of 23. In 1964, she and her family moved to South Woodbury. She worked in the Emergency Department of Central Vermont Hospital in Berlin, and later at several nursing homes, including Greensboro Nursing Home, McFarland House, Heaton House, and Woodridge Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.
As a young child she often played piano, accordion and sang with her mother and sisters at local dances. She was a member of local bands, later performed with the Golden Vibrations, and recorded two albums.
Survivors include five children: Gary Benjamin, Kevin Benjamin, Allen Benjamin and Margie Preman, all of Woodbury, and Janice Champagne, of Pembroke Pines, Florida; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Harvey Dougherty, of Bonnie River, New Brunswick, and James Dougherty, of Bury, Quebec; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her husband in 2006, and five siblings: Stuart Dougherty, Herman Dougherty, Carmen Clough, Ethel Smyth and Evelyn Davies.
Memorial services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 30, 2014, at the South Woodbury Church. A luncheon will immediately follow. Burial will be at 3 p.m. in the Main Street Cemetery in Hardwick.
