WHITING The Vermont Health Department says tests have detected the virus that causes Eastern equine encephalitis in mosquitoes taken from two pools in the town of Whiting.

The mosquitoes that were collected Tuesday mark the first time EEE has been found in southern Addison County this year.

The virus was found in mosquitoes collected in Grand Isle County in June.

Two weeks ago West Nile virus was detected for the first time this season in mosquito pools in St. Albans.

Both viruses are spread by mosquitoes. No human or animal cases have been reported this year.

Vermont infectious disease epidemiologist Erica Berle says the risk of human infection is low, but its not zero.

People are urged to guard against mosquito bites.
