CAMBRIDGE A stuck tractor trailer has forced the closure of Vermont Route 108 through Smugglers Notch. Vermont state police say the truck was stuck on the narrow, winding mountain road that passes between rock cliffs around 2 p.m. Wednesday. Police say the truck, which was hauling about 99,000 pounds of sand to the Stowe Mountain Golf Club, was heavily damaged and hung up on large boulders.

By Wednesday evening sand was being off-loaded from the trailer so the vehicle could be removed and the road reopened.

Authorities say tractor trailers and large buses are prohibited on the mountain pass between Stowe and Jeffersonville and the road is marked with warning signs.

Police say the driver has been ticketed for failure to obey traffic control devices and equipment violations.
