READING — Harold “Bud” Singleton, 94, of Reading, died Sunday, Aug. 17, 2014, at Valley Regional Hospital.
He was born in Truxton, New York, to Charles and Mabel Atkinson Singleton. At 17 he went to live with an aunt and uncle in Reading, where he later met and married Mary Senna.
He served in the U.S. Army 76th Division as a medic in World War II.
He and his wife owned and operated Singleton’s Store in Reading for 27 years. They went on to build another successful store in Proctorsville and were honored in 1993 as Vermont Retail Grocers of the Year. He retired in 1999.
He enjoyed bird hunting, storytelling and helping a friend or neighbor in need.
He was predeceased by his son, Charles. He leaves his wife of 71 years; five children: Joan Racicot, and Robert, Tom, John and Jerry; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family members.
A memorial visitation will be held Thursday, Aug. 21, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, Aug. 22, at 11 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Windsor.
