    HARDWICK — Phyllis M. Smith Zecchinelli passed away Aug. 9, 2014, in Craftsbury. The second daughter of William and Martha Smith, of Staffordshire, England, Phyllis was born on March 9, 1918.

    Phyllis was schooled in Leamore and Walsall, Staffs, and was on the staff of H.D. Jackson and Co. She proudly served her country in civil defense during World War II.

    Her children and grandchildren heard many stories of this phase of her life. Hiking, cycling, tennis and basketball were her great joys in life. She loved music, ballroom dancing and the theater.

    On Feb. 11, 1945, she married Allen A. Zecchinelli, of Hardwick, in Christ’s Church, Blakenall Heath, England. In March 1946 she joined her husband in the United States. For 32 years they owned and operated Cox Pharmacy. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church in Hardwick, where she served as junior and senior warden, Altar Guild directoress for 60 years and president of St. John’s Guild. She played an active role in the Hardwick Woman’s Club, was a member of the Hardwick Historical Society, Order of the Eastern Star, Mackville Home Makers, was a Jeudevine Library trustee and Hardwick’s chairperson for the Children’s Aid Society. She served on the board of directors for Northeast Kingdom Mental Health and the board of trustees of the Greensboro Nursing Home. Her love of children brought her to become a mentor for the Hardwick Elementary School, where she enjoyed her time with the children. On Jan. 11, 2000, she received the Vermont Public Service Awards Caledonia County Certificate of Appreciation in recognition of her many years of service to the town of Hardwick.

    She was predeceased by her parents, her husband and four brothers and sisters. She is survived by her daughter, Judith Z. Nudd, and her husband, James, of Hardwick; her son, Vincent Zecchinelli, and wife Sharon, of Enosburg Falls; her grandsons, Jason Zecchinelli and family, of Old Orchard Beach, Maine, and Justin Zecchinelli and his family, of Stevens Mill, Pennsylvania; and a brother, sister and nieces and nephew in England.

    Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Aug. 16, at 1 p.m. in St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church, West Church Street, Hardwick. Private interment will follow the services.

    In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name for Craftsbury Community Care Center, 1784 East Craftsbury Road, Craftsbury, VT 05826.

    Arrangements are in the care of des Groseilliers Funeral Homes, Church Street, Hardwick.
