• Vt seeks GMO suit dismissal
     | August 09,2014

MONTPELIER ó The Vermont attorney general has asked a federal court to throw out a lawsuit filed by the Grocery Manufacturers Association and other industry groups over a Vermont law that requires the labeling of food made with genetically modified organisms.

Attorney General William Sorrell said in the court filing Friday that Vermontís labeling law withstands all five challenges to its constitutionality made by the plaintiffs.

The federal lawsuit, filed in June in Burlington, wants the labeling law overturned and describes it as ďa misguided measure that will set the nation on a path toward a 50-state patchwork of GMO labeling policies.Ē The lawsuit claims that food made with GMOs is safe and says the Vermont law exceeds the stateís authority under the U.S. Constitution.
