Former ICE agent won’t serve jail time in gun case
BRATTLEBORO ó A former U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent will serve no jail time for buying and selling firearms at gun shows without a license.
Special Agent Richard Bernholz, who retired in 2012, pleaded guilty last year in federal court in Brattleboro to filing a false tax return and aiding and abetting in the failure to keep adequate records by a federal firearms licensee. In exchange, he provided evidence against a second person involved in the firearms sales.
Bernholzís lawyer said his client paid nearly $11,000 in overdue state and federal taxes connected with income from the sales.
U.S. District Judge J. Garvan Murtha said he thought Bernholz learned his lesson.
More than 150 firearms were seized from Bernholzís Franklin home by another agency in 2011.MORE IN This Just InSmuggler jailed
