    gun in diaper bag

BEEBE PLAIN — Vermont State Police say a toddler found a loaded handgun in her diaper bag at a daycare center in Beebe Plains.

Police say the grandmother of the 17-month-old child was dropping the toddler off at the day care on Thursday when she forgot that the gun was in the bag.

Authorities say the girl found the gun in the bag and brought it to the attention of staff members.

The day care notified the parents and the Vermont Department for Children and Families.

A DCF worker told police that the grandmother placed the handgun in the bag as she was leaving the house in a hurry. A safety lock strap prevented the gun from being fired.

The incident was reported to police by an anonymous caller.
