BARRE ó Ellen Richardson Andrews unexpectedly passed away on July 30, 2014. Her husband, James Dalton Andrews, had predeceased her on February 26, 2000.
She was born in North Stratford, New Hampshire, the sixth child of Cora Bangs Richardson and Ira Richardson, who predeceased her. She was also predeceased by four brothers: Norton, Errol, Paul and Thomas, and one sister, Mary Jean Richardson Fitzgerald.
She grew up in Lebanon, New Hampshire and graduated from Lebanon High School in 1954.
She was first married to Richard Fadden Sr. of Meriden, New Hampshire in April 1955, and later divorced in 1973. She married James Andrews on March 9, 1974. They made their home in Barre City.
A graduate of Johnson State College and Vermont Law School, she was a Realtor for 20 years with her husband in Andrews Real Estate.
After graduating from law school in 1985 she became an attorney and practiced law in her office at 18 Maple Avenue in Barre until her retirement in 2004.
Ellen was very community minded. She was elected to the Barre City School Board in 1986, and served two years. Later she served six years on the Barre City Council in the 1990s, representing the residents of Ward 2 in Barre City.
She was a past president of the Business and Professional Womenís Group, BPW. She was also a long-time member of the Central Vermont Rotary Club, having served as president in 1994 and 1995.
She has been a long-time member of the Barre Area Senior Center, serving 3 terms as president, and several years as chairwoman of the Board of Trustees. She also served on the Board of Commissioners of the Barre Housing Authority for five years.
Survivors include her three children: Cynthia Ellen Rossi, of Montpelier, Richard Fadden Jr., of Barre, and Wendy Nichols, of Camden, Maine; three grandsons: Christopher Thomas Rossi and his wife, Ellen, of Alta, Utah, Anthony Lewis Rossi, of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Jeffrey Ryan Lawson, of Bowdoinham, Maine, as well as two great-grandsons, Aksel Erling Rossi and Kai Oliver Rossi, the sons of Chris and Ellen Rossi.
She is also survived by two sisters, Irene Ackerson, of Lebanon, New Hampshire, and Corene Pelletier, of Quechee, Vermont. She also leaves many nieces and nephews with whom she kept in touch via email over many years.
Her life will be honored and celebrated on Wednesday August 6, 2014 at 11 a.m. in the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre.
Burial will follow at the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph Center.
