Fire displaces two families
CALAIS — A fire at 122 George Road in Calais Monday night has displaced two families.
East Montpelier Fire Chief Ty Rolland said the cause of the fire was determined to be structural. Rolland said firefighters responded to the scene at around 8:15 p.m. He said the fire was contained a little before midnight but that the house was “a total loss.”
Rolland reported there were no injuries and that the families were outside the house before firefighters arrived. He was not able to identify the names of the families living there.
Rolland said there were responders from the towns of East Montpelier, Woodbury, Plainfield, Berlin and Worcester at the scene Monday. He estimated there were between 50 to 60 firefighters battling the blaze.
Doug Bishop, director of communications and external relations at the Vermont and New Hampshire Upper Valley Red Cross, said the organization provided assistance to the two families — one a family of four; the other, a family of two — in the days following the fire. He said the family of four made arrangements to stay with relatives, but that the Red Cross provided temporary lodging to the family of two.
Bishop said both families are receiving a degree of financial assistance from the Red Cross.
