    350VT event set for Thursday

MONTPELIER — Activists from 350VT and citizens supporting the campaign will gather on Thursday at the State House from noon to 1 p.m. in support of divesting the State Pension Fund from fossil fuel companies.

The action, titled “Deliver on Divestment,” is a campaign message aimed at state lesislators, the Vermont Pension Investment Committee, and State Treasurer Beth Pearce, and will see the group deliver more than 2,000 signatures in support of the request to the treasurer’s office.

The rally will feature several speakers, including beneficiaries of the state’s retirement funds and Dean Corren, a Progressive candidate running for lieutenant governor, according to a news release. A group of supporters of the 350VT will arrive by bicycle.

The action will culminate with a short walk over to the Pavillion Building, where activists will meet with Pearce in the Office of the Treasurer.

“Divestment is the opposite of investment, getting rid of investments that are unethical or morally questionable,” noted the group’s news release. “Fossil fuel divestment is a growing political and social movement to reject the influence of fossil fuel companies, in favor of policy and action to mitigate climate change.”

The State Pension Fund is Vermont’s largest publicly traded fund.
