    Excellent and true

    A recent editorial, “A question of values,” brought home to me the values with which I grew up, which “value” cannot replace.

    Northern Dutchess County, in New York’s Hudson Valley, was well-known for its dairy farms and our hills, mountains and open fields. We had a chicken farm and there were always cattle within sight. As time went on, the land took on a different value as many (but not all) of the people moving in bought up much of our hills and towns, and houses replaced dairy farms.

    Some of our classmates still get together every year, and for years I avoided going by my home, especially since the dairy farm next door had been sold when the farmer’s son passed away. Finally, 3 years ago, I did and yes, the pastures and woods are built up. Many small locally-owned businesses have been replaced by large chain stores, forcing their closing. (Shop “local”!)

    Living on the edge of a forest here and not visible to others except neighbors, I wouldn’t sell off a small wooded parcel with across-the-valley visibility. We should all do what we can to keep what so many of us value.
