    System needs to end

Sixteen-year-old Mohammad Abu Khdeir was found dead after having been burned alive in East Jerusalem, an apparent victim of a revenge attack following the killing of three Israeli teenagers on the West Bank. He was the 10th Palestinian killed by the Israeli military or right-wing extremists in the last two weeks.

We mourn all lost lives. To honor them all, we need to think about how to change the conditions that make such unthinkable violence possible. The ongoing Israeli occupation is at the heart of this crisis.

While we mourn the three Israeli teenagers killed in the West Bank, we should also mourn the 1,384 Palestinian children killed by the Israeli military since 2000, according to the Israeli human-rights group B’Tselem. That’s one Palestinian child killed by the Israeli military every three to four days. These deaths are virtually ignored by the mainstream media.

We cannot ignore the huge power difference between Israelis and Palestinians or pretend it is just a cycle of violence with no root cause or context. These horrific incidents are happening in the context of an ongoing colonial occupation, itself a system of daily violence.

That system, which by its very nature puts the lives and human rights of all in jeopardy, needs to end.
