Mildred Jennie Slayton
BARRE — Mildred Jennie Slayton, 95, died Friday, July 4, 2014, after a short illness at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin.
Born on Dec. 10, 1918 in Brome, Quebec, Canada, she was the daughter of John and Jennie (Farmer) Thompson. Mildred’s family moved to a farm in East Montpelier in 1927. She attended the Four Corners School in East Montpelier and graduated from Plainfield High School in 1936. In earlier years, she worked at the Adamant Store in Calais.
On Aug. 18, 1944, Mildred married Maurice Slayton. She moved to Connecticut and worked at the Pratt and Whitney Aircraft Company in Hartford, Connecticut, while Maurice served in the U.S. Army.
Following their move to Barre, she worked at the former Sprague Electric Co. for 35 years, retiring in 1983. When they retired, Mildred and Maurice traveled all over the United States and Canada. After Maurice died in 2003, she remained in their home in Barre until moving to Fortier’s Community Care Home in 2008.
Her sister-in-law, Lois Toby, of Adamant, and several nieces and nephews, including Marjorie St. John, who has supervised her care for several years, survive Mildred.
In addition to her husband and parents, a brother, Norman Thompson, and four sisters, Kathleen Thompson, Irene Holmes, Gladys Lawson and Bertha Tucker predeceased her.
According to Mildred’s wishes, there will be no calling hours. Her graveside service will be held at the Plain-Mont Cemetery in East Montpelier on Friday July 11, 2014, at 10 a.m.
