    Vt. lines up legal

    team for GMO fight

MONTPELIER — The state of Vermont is lining up its legal team for the expected legal battle over the state’s effort to require the labeling of food made with genetically modified organisms.

On Monday, Attorney General Bill Sorrell announced his in-house legal team and said he’s hired a Washington law firm to help defend the labeling law.

The Grocery Manufacturers Association and other industry groups sued Vermont last month over the GMO law that was signed in May.

The suit was expected and even before it was filed, the state set up a separate legal defense fund to help pay legal expenses.

Sorrell says his office has negotiated a contract worth almost $1.5 million with the Washington law firm.

The state expects to file its response to the lawsuit next month.
