WATERBURY ó Vermont State Police troopers are going to be on roads across the state over the weekend trying to keep people safe.

    Additional traffic enforcement is planned.

Patrols and safety checkpoints will be based on reviews of where fatal crashes have occurred in the state.

Lt. Garry Scott said police and others have made great strides in reducing traffic fatalities through enforcement, education, engineering of safer roads and better medical care.

But Scott said thereís still more to do.

So far this year there have been 17 traffic fatalities.

Of those, five were suspected to be due to speeding, and four due to driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Two victims were not wearing seat belts.
