BARRE — Albert Phillip Johnson Sr., 87, of Richardson Road, died Wednesday, July 2, 2014, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
Born Oct. 31, 1926, in Barre, he was the son of Albert S. and Isabelle D. (Farmer) Johnson. He attended local schools and Spaulding High School.
As a teenager, Albert worked as a messenger for Western Union and the American Red Cross delivering war messages for the government. Later, he worked as a cook for the New Moon Diner, but most of his working career was spent driving a taxi cab for the Central Vermont Cab Co. from 1951 until 1971.
On Oct. 28, 1966, he married Marion Bergeron in Middlesex; the couple had always lived in the Barre area.
He had dedicated many years to community service, which included volunteering for the Barre Housing Authority, Vermont Legal Aid and 12 years on the Governor’s Fair Housing Board for the Poor and Low Income and for the Berlin Health and Rehabilitation Center. Additionally, he served on the board of the United Community Credit Union for 14 years.
Playing cards, watching TV, going to yard sales and collecting clocks were special times for Albert.
Beside his wife, Marion, he is survived by sons Albert P. Johnson Jr. and his wife, Diane, and Mark Johnson and his wife, Bertha; four daughters, Donna Johnson, Bonnie Willey and her husband, Nelson, Judy Sassi and her husband, Mark, and Jacqui Babin and her husband, Reg; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Tibbetts and Loretta Predix; and one brother-in-law, Arthur Bergeron. Also surviving are several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, along with nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents, Albert was predeceased by his sisters, Dorothy Ouellette, Christyna Catto and Albertine Freeland.
At Albert’s request, there are no services or calling hours planned.
