leads to charges
SOUTH BURLINGTON — Five women have been charged with trespass after staging a “knit-in” protest against a planned gas pipeline expansion into Addison County.
The Burlington Free Press reported that the protest occurred Wednesday evening in South Burlington in the waiting room of Vermont Gas Systems.
The women and a freelance videographer were cited.
Eileen Simollardes, the utility’s vice president of project expansion, invited the women to talk in a private setting but they declined several times during the 90-minute protest.
It wasn’t the first protest to end with charges. On May 27, a worker was injured during a protest and two people climbed onto the utility’s roof to display a banner.
The project has received state and federal approval but needs easement agreements to cross private properties.MORE IN Vermont News
