BARRE — A Barre woman is facing a felony charge after police say she vandalized her neighbor’s vehicle with a key.

Tabitha N. Manning, 38, pleaded not guilty Thursday in Washington County criminal court to one count of felony unlawful mischief.

If convicted, she faces a maximum of five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

On May 2, according to the police affidavit, police received a call from Angela Valyou saying she had seen her neighbor, Manning, in the Wal-Mart at the Berlin Mall.

Valyou told police she and Manning have an extensive history of disputes.

When she returned to her car, Valyou told police, someone approached her saying a woman had vandalized her vehicle with a key.

Police say two significant scratches were seen on the front and rear doors of the passenger side. The rear door had an “X” scratch on it deep enough to dig through all the levels of paint, according to the affidavit.

When police checked the video surveillance from the Berlin Mall parking lot, they say, a woman who looked like Manning is seen walking up to Valyou’s vehicle. She faces it and “spends an abnormal amount of time” at the places where the vehicle was scratched.

Police say the damage to the vehicle is estimated at $1,320.

When police spoke with Manning, she denied any part in the incident, saying she had a twin sister.

She also later said she was never at Wal-Mart.

Manning has convictions of disorderly conduct in September and prohibited sexual acts in 1996.
