• Background checks should be universal
    June 17,2014

I certainly hope that the Legislature is more receptive this year to some changes in Vermont’s lax gun laws. It seems that almost every day we read of some atrocity with weapons. It is just a matter of time until it happens in Vermont, and I, for one, would like to be proactive and stop it before it starts. In the 16 states where background checks are required on all handgun sales, 38 percent fewer women are shot to death by an intimate partner, firearm suicides drop by 49 percent, gun trafficking is 48 percent lower, and 39 percent fewer law enforcement officers are shot to death.

I can’t understand why anyone would be against background checks for all gun sales — unless they have something to hide.
