RUTLAND — Mildred “Milly” Blanche Wardwell (nee Barber) died June 7, 2014, at The Pines, Rutland, Vermont.
Milly was born in Cavendish, Vermont, on Dec. 22, 1922, the second daughter of Clifford and Lazelle Paul Barber. Milly graduated from Black River Academy in Ludlow in 1941. Until last year she attended every class reunion since graduation.
Milly worked at the Chance Vought aircraft plant in Bridgeport, Connecticut, during World War II. She returned to Vermont where her heart was and married Mason Wardwell in 1947. They lived in West Bridgewater, Vermont, where Mason ran the family sawmill on Wardwell Road, later moving to Post Road. Their children, Frank Clifford Wardwell and Gayla Wardwell, were born in Rutland in 1948 and 1952.
Milly worked at various times at a bookbindery, in the hospitality industry, and in the Vermont Council on Aging.
Milly was patient, kind, loving, generous in spirit. Her quiet strength was a blessing to her family and friends. She had a smile that lit up the world.
Milly’s interests included family history, artistic endeavors, crossword puzzles and travel. A highlight of her life was a trip to Ireland in 2007 with two of her sisters, Vi and Jean, and a niece, Mary Ann. She enjoyed going out to lunch at Seward’s with her sister and brother-in-law Betty and Ernest Hakey. She shared a special bond with her brother George and his wife, Carol.
Milly’s husband, Mason, died in 2004. She was also predeceased by a sister, Lettie Robinson, and a brother, Victor Barber. Survivors include her son, Frank, of Rutland, her daughter, Gayla, of Oregon, her grandson, Mason (Lynn), her great-grandson, Chase, of Rutland. Also surviving are her sisters Ester Bennington, of Ontario, Violet Hudder, of Connecticut, Jean Jeffers, of California, Betty Hakey, of Virginia; a brother, George Barber (Carol), of Waterbury; a special niece, Joyce Phillips, of Bridgewater; and a grandniece, Pam Pinney, of Rutland; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Arrangements are with Aldous Funeral Home in Rutland. A celebration of Milly’s life will be held later in the summer.
