There are many reasons to oppose the gas pipeline proposed for the western side of Vermont, including safety, potential threats to the lake and the use of fracked gas. But there is a larger overriding issue: that we simply must stop depending on fossil fuels. Instead, Vermont Gas is proposing, and state government is supporting, new fossil fuel infrastructure that will continue to burn fossil fuels for years to come.
Our world is heating up precipitously with disastrous results already in terms of rising seas, massive storms, prolonged droughts and increasing wildfires. For example, a recent study stated that the evidence is clear that the West Antarctic ice shelf is irreversibly melting and as a result sea levels are going to rise at least 4 feet. It is happening now, but these are just the harbingers of what is to come. The damage and devastation will be enormous.
This is not just an environmental, political or economic issue. This is a moral issue. We are making decisions today that will leave a hostile world for our children and grandchildren. Many of us, like myself, will be gone by the time the worst damage from climate change is felt. But our children and grandchildren will feel the full impact, and they will live in a world that is far different than the one we enjoy today. That is just not right.
It is immoral for us to leave this awful legacy to our children. We need to do whatever we can right now to alter the course of climate change. We can start by saying “no” to yet more fossil fuel infrastructure.
