BERLIN — A smoke bomb that looked like a grenade caused a bit of a stir in the parking lot of the shopping center that houses Price Chopper and Staples in Berlin.

The man who called it in to authorities said he saw a white man about 6-feet three-inches tall place the grenade-looking device down on the parking lot and walk into the Dollar Tree store. He then saw the man walk out of the store and leave the plaza.

Berlin Fire Chief Miles Silk Jr. baby-sat the device with his vehicle’s red lights flashing until police arrived around 40 minutes after the call came in. Silk spoke with the officer and it was decided not to do anything about the device. Silk said it was just a smoke bomb.
