• Death of prison inmate ruled suicide
     | June 12,2014

MONTPELIER ó An autopsy has determined that a Vermont prison inmate committed suicide by overdosing on a drug that was prescribed to him.

On Tuesday the Health Department released an amended death certificate for 43-year-old Shayn Turner that ruled he committed suicide on March 25 by intentionally taking an overdose of the drug doxepin, which had been prescribed to him.

He was being held at the St. Albans prison.

A drug directory says doxepin is commonly used to treat depression.

Turner was serving a 40-year prison sentence for sexually assaulting a young girl.

It was the second suicide in a Vermont prison in less than a year, though the two were the first in a decade.

Corrections Commissioner Andy Pallito says two outside investigations are being conducted into Turnerís death.
