    Dollar General’s siren song

Barre has become encircled by Dollar General stores, with a store on three of the major roads leading to downtown. The most recent store, located in the former Times Argus building, seems almost like a slap in the face — a direct challenge to the retailers a few blocks away on Main Street.

Dollar General may provide savings for those on a limited budget, but if you have a choice, drive by their seemingly welcoming parking lots and garish yellow signs. There is plenty of parking on Main Street, and you will be shopping at stores owned by your neighbors; stores that offer great customer service and reasonable prices. Shop where profits are reinvested in the local community — not shipped out to corporate headquarters in Tennessee.

Let’s make the choice to shop locally and support our neighbors and downtowns.
