Teen sentenced for break-ins
BARRE — A Granite City teenager has been given a four-year deferred sentence for his involvement in several central Vermont break-ins.
Tyler Farnsworth, 19, pleaded guilty Tuesday in Washington County criminal court in Barre to two counts of felony burglary and two counts of petit larceny. He was sentenced to four to five days of work crew on the petit larceny convictions and a four-year deferred sentence on the burglary convictions.
Farnsworth was placed on probation. If he stays out of trouble, the burglary convictions will be expunged from his record. If not, he faces a four-year prison term.
According to the Vermont State Police affidavit, police responded to a reported burglary Jan. 14 at LBJ’s Grocery in Worcester. State police say four people, including Farnsworth, smashed a window, went into the store and took wine and cigarettes.
Two people grabbed bottles of wine and left through the broken window, while the others opened large plastic trash bags and started filling them with cigarettes, according to the affidavit. Police say the burglars left with $6,219 in cigarettes and $83.95 worth of wine. Police estimate the cost to repair the damaged window was $325.
On Jan. 24, police say, Farnsworth and another person smashed the front door of Mac’s Market in Warren and stole $1,351.16 worth of cigarettes. The damage to the door was put at $1,017.54.
Farnsworth was also involved in an incident at Harwood Union High School in Duxbury in September. Police say he broke into a storage building near the baseball field and stole several bows and arrows. Several of the arrows were shot into the ground around the soccer and baseball fields.
When state police spoke to Farnsworth, he admitted breaking into the building by climbing a fence.
In court Tuesday, Judge Thomas Zonay asked Farnsworth why he committed these crimes. Farnsworth replied that he wasn’t really sure.MORE IN This Just InKABUL, Afghanistan — Confusion reigned in the wake of the deadly bombing Saturday of a hospital... Full Story
