CONCORD — Phyllis Rae (Morehouse) Wood, 84, passed away on Wednesday, May 14, 2014, at her home in Concord.
She was born in St. Johnsbury on Feb. 28, 1930, the youngest of the six children of George and Annie Hale Morehouse. Shortly thereafter the family moved to Concord.
After graduation from Concord High School, Phyllis was employed by the Ralston Purina Co. in St. Johnsbury.
In June 1951, she became a farm wife when she married Albert Wood, of South Kirby. They made their home in South Kirby until 1953 when they purchased the dairy farm in Concord, where they were to spend the rest of their lives. Albert passed away in 2004.
A quiet supporter of the farm operations, Phyllis raised their six children and was active in Concord school and community life. She was a Cub Scout den leader, an officer in the Concord High School alumni association, and a volunteer at the school libraries in Concord and Waterford. She has been an active member of the Concord Historical Society. She spent many hours cooking, sewing and crafting, canning, and “running the roads” to be sure the kids never missed a school activity or event despite the chores of life on the farm.
She is a 50-year member of Adah Chapter 39 of Concord, past worthy matron, and secretary for many years.
Phyllis is survived by three daughters and their husbands: Leslie and Cedric “Rick” Sanborn, of Barre, Jane and Doug Bengston, of St. Johnsbury, Linda and Jerry Sherman, of Lyndonville; two sons and their wives: Roger and Joy Wood, of Concord, James and Jennifer Wood, of South Kirby. Their son Alan passed away in 2010.
