MONTPELIER -- Gov. Peter Shumlin wants an investigation of the state Department for Children and Families after learning a caseworker visited a home on a child abuse claim shortly before the child died.

The child, 15-month-old Peighton Geraw, died an hour after the April 4 visit by the caseworker to his Winooski home. Authorities call the death a homicide.

The Burlington Free Press reports Shumlin said he immediately instructed DCF Commissioner David Yacovone to investigate each case thoroughly; he also demanded a broader examination.

Police said Fletcher Allen Health Care personnel spotted bruises on Peighton's neck while treating him for a fever and vomiting on April 2. The hospital notified DCF, but discharged Peighton into the care of his mother and her boyfriend.

Yacovone said an internal review would be conducted.
