    Protect all humanity

Thank you for your editorial on the death sentence on May 7. It clearly expresses a major problem with the death penalty, one of the reasons the Catholic Church is so opposed to it. In fact your words have an almost universal meaning. Adding just a few words to your words shows this.

“And that is where they (sic) hypocrisy comes in. Jailers who perform capital punishment are committing a violent act. Human beings struggle to live, and overpowering the desire to live requires violent intervention. The brutality of the intervention is dehumanizing, even at its most humane. That is why executions (and I would add, abortions) are hidden away from the public and why corrections officials (and I would add, abortion providers) continue to look for chemicals that will seem nonviolent.”

Continue to proclaim and protect the humanity of all persons.
